International Day of Education 2026: January 24 marks the International Day of Education, a global observance highlighting bold initiatives that make learning accessible, meaningful, and future-ready. In India, a transformative story is unfolding in rural communities, where students are gaining access to modern classrooms, digital tools, and holistic education.

At the heart of this transformation are Wake Up India Foundation, a youth-driven social organisation, and the Gurukul Group of Schools, a network of 19 schools across Bihar, including Gurukul International School Manihari. Together, they are empowering thousands of students with strong foundations and forward-looking classrooms.

Founded in 2010 by Suyash H Varma, Wake Up India Foundation began as a small collective of young people who believed that education could be the most powerful tool for long-term social transformation.

Over the last 15 years, the foundation has built programs, systems, and partnerships to address India’s deepest educational gaps. Today, it works closely with college students and young professionals through its Campus Project, active in Delhi, Bangalore, and Ranchi, nurturing socially conscious leadership and civic responsibility.

“Education is liberation. It gives people the tools to imagine and build their future,” says Suyash H Varma, Founder President, Wake Up India Foundation.

This philosophy also inspired initiatives like the Rural Residential Internship Program, where students live in villages for immersive experiences, understanding rural life, supporting local education, and contributing to community development firsthand.

The collaboration with the Gurukul Group of Schools is about alignment, not ownership. Wake Up India Foundation brings vision, youth engagement, and social innovation, while Gurukul Group of Schools contributes on-ground infrastructure, experienced educators, and deep community roots.

“Our goal is not just literacy — it’s confidence, values, and exposure. Rural students deserve the same future-ready education as anyone else,” said Himanshu Kumar Varma, Regional Director, Gurukul Group of Schools.

    Ancient Values, Modern Learning

The schools follow a Gurukul-inspired value system – discipline, respect, and holistic development – while integrating modern pedagogy. Students grow academically, ethically, and emotionally.

    Technology Reaches the Village

Through Wake Up India Foundation’s involvement, rural campuses are being equipped with:

    • Smart classrooms
    • Smart boards
    • Dedicated computer labs
    • Digital learning tools

For many students, this is their first structured digital education – a critical step in bridging the rural-urban learning divide.

As the world talks about the future of learning, stories like this remind us that transformation doesn’t always begin in policy rooms or global summits. Sometimes, it begins when a 15-year-old youth movement finds the right classroom partner – and together, they decide that rural India deserves nothing less than the best.

Education, after all, is not just preparation for life. It is life – especially when done right.
