Singer-actor trades fantasy for ‘Focker-In-Law’ comedy alongside De Niro and Stiller

Pop star-turned-actor Ariana Grande pivots sharply from fantasy spectacle to full-blown family farce, as the first trailer for ‘Focker-In-Law’ signals her entry into one of Hollywood’s most recognisable comedy franchises.

The upcoming film, directed by John Hamburg, revives the long-running ‘Meet the Parents’ series, pairing Grande with franchise regulars Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro. This time, Grande takes centre stage as Olivia Jones, an FBI hostage negotiator navigating the notoriously fraught Focker family dynamic as a prospective daughter-in-law.

The trailer wastes little time plunging her into chaos. De Niro’s Jack Byrnes subjects Olivia to a lie detector test, continuing the franchise’s tradition of high-stakes awkwardness and relentless scrutiny.

Yet Grande’s character appears unfazed, matching the family’s intensity while deftly steering through a minefield of uncomfortable encounters and escalating tensions.

The film leans into the formula that defined earlier instalments – ‘Meet the Parents’, ‘Meet the Fockers’ and ‘Little Fockers’ – blending domestic anxiety with sharp comedic timing.

Returning cast members are joined by Owen Wilson, Beanie Feldstein, Eduardo Franco, Blythe Danner and Teri Polo, reinforcing the ensemble-driven appeal.

For Grande, the role marks a notable tonal shift following her portrayal of Glinda in ‘Wicked’, which earned her an Academy Award nomination and broadened her cinematic profile. While she has remained musically quiet since ‘Eternal Sunshine’ in 2024, a return to touring is expected later this year.

The original ‘Meet the Parents’, released in 2000, introduced audiences to Greg Focker, played by Stiller, whose attempts to impress his partner’s intimidating father, portrayed by De Niro, quickly spiral into escalating comedic chaos.

Its success led to ‘Meet the Fockers’ in 2004, which expanded the story by introducing the eccentric parents of Stiller’s character, played by Dustin Hoffman and Barbra Streisand, turning the franchise into a broader family comedy ensemble.

However, by the time ‘Little Fockers’ arrived in 2010, critical reception had weakened, and box office performance was less robust compared with earlier entries.

The new chapter introduces a fresh storyline involving Stiller’s character’s son and a new romantic partner, played by Grande, whose role brings an unexpected background as a former FBI hostage negotiator.

Set for release on November 26, strategically timed with the US Thanksgiving holiday, ‘Focker-In-Law’ places Grande at the centre of a high-profile comedic revival, testing her range in a genre built on discomfort, timing and familial chaos.
