Why Dance Is One of the Most Powerful Confidence-Building WorkoutsWhy Dance Is One of the Most Powerful Confidence-Building Workouts

Dance isn’t just one of the most insanely fun workouts—it’s also a complete confidence and resilience builder. I know this because I learned to shuffle dance in 2019, and it has shifted every single area of my life—from physical fitness, to body image, to mindset, to courage.

I can bet you’ve seen dancers all over the internet (probably shuffling, honestly—the dance has taken a major leap online since 2020!). You think, “That looks fun,” followed immediately by, “But I could never.” At first, I was that girl too.

But on a total whim, I decided to stop watching and just give it a shot. What started as a “why not?” hobby quickly became the most significant investment in my mental energy I’ve ever made.

In 2026, the fitness approach that sticks won’t be the one that burns the most calories—it will be whatever brings the most life back into your soul and gives you back your mental energy. Learning to shuffle dance is a total-body workout that sharpens cognitive function and builds resilience. But the lasting change is about more than just a great sweat.

It’s about how dance pulls you out of a constant state of doing more, more, more—and helps you stay present while building resilience and confidence like never before.

Resilience: Persevering When It Gets Tough

In the beginning, dance can feel messy. You’ll try a move, your feet will tangle, and your brain will feel like it’s short-circuiting. Most people quit here because they hate the feeling of “failing.” But this is exactly where resilience is born.

This building phase is what we call a growth mindset. Every time I hit a moment where it felt like I’d never get it—but chose to try the step again instead of walking away—I was training my nervous system to stay calm under pressure.

I learned that failing at a move isn’t a reflection of my worth; it’s simply part of the learning process. And that grit didn’t stay on the dance floor. It taught me how to try again in my business and personal life when things didn’t go perfectly on the first take.

Confidence: The Courage to Be Seen

There is a massive difference between dancing alone in your room and owning your space in the world. For me, shuffle dance became the bridge to a new level of social confidence.

It started with the vulnerability of posting a video online and evolved into dancing in public—and building an incredible community of friends along the way.

By intentionally putting myself in a position to be seen while doing something I loved, I dismantled the fear of judgment. This is a form of nervous system regulation: teaching your body that it is safe to be seen, safe to take up space, and safe to be authentically you.

When you stop shying away from authentic movement on the dance floor, you carry that confidence into all areas of your life.

    Self-Belief: Rewiring the “I Can’t”

If you’ve ever said, “I’m just not built to dance,” or “I’m too old to learn that,” shuffling is living proof that those beliefs aren’t true.

This is the power of neuroplasticity. When you learn a complex new skill like footwork, you are literally building new neural pathways in your brain.

Mastering a dance I once thought was impossible shifted my entire self-belief system. I realized that if I could build coordination and rhythm from scratch, I could learn anything at any age.

(And now, I teach students from all over the world—from their 20s to their late 60s and beyond—to do the same.)

This proves to your brain that your potential isn’t fixed. You aren’t stuck with the skills you have now. You are a work in progress—and that realization is incredibly empowering.

Get Into a Rhythm of Confidence

You don’t need a dance background or “natural rhythm” to start. You just need the willingness to trade “I can’t” for “why the heck not?”

When you prioritize movement that makes you feel powerful, you build a body and mind that are resilient, confident, and ready for anything. Shuffle dance can be a powerful key to making 2026 your strongest year yet.

It starts with giving it a shot, laughing when it feels wonky, and growing tremendously—both on and off the dance floor.

Where in your life are you ready to embrace the “messy” beginner phase so you can finally find your rhythm? — Alex
