    NEED TO KNOW

    • Two football players were injured after they were allegedly stabbed by their teammate
    • The incident took place at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) on Nov. 22
    • UAB player Daniel Mincey has since been charged with aggravated assault and attempted murder

Two University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) football players were injured after they were allegedly stabbed by their teammate this weekend.

The alleged stabbing took place on campus at the college’s Football Operations Center at around 10 a.m. local time on Saturday, Nov. 22, the Associated Press, NBC News and WVTM 13 News reported.

Two football players were sent to the hospital in stable condition, while their teammate was taken into custody, the outlets reported.

UAB player Daniel Mincey has since been charged with aggravated assault and attempted murder and was booked into the Jefferson County Jail on Nov. 22, according to county records viewed by PEOPLE.

The identities of the two players who were injured have yet to be shared publicly.

In a statement to the New York Post, a UAB spokesperson said, “There is no threat to campus.”

The representative highlighted how the school’s team elected to still play their game, adding, “UAB’s top priority remains the safety and well-being of all of our students.”

In a statement to NBC News, the spokesperson said the two players injured “are in stable condition.”

“Our thoughts are with them and their families as they recover,” the rep added.

Looking back at how the UAB football team continued their scheduled game against the University of South Florida despite the incident, head football coach Alex Mortensen said at a press conference, “We spoke with the team and those guys really wanted to play today.”

“And really, the conversation went back to the seniors, you know, with it being senior day, they wanted to go play for them,” he added.

“We want to be very sympathetic to what everyone’s going through and make sure everyone understood they had an opportunity to seek counseling or anything that they needed or wanted that the university is here to help them,” continued Mortensen.

PEOPLE has reached out to the UAB and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office for comment.
