Hublot’s Big Bang Unico Magic Ceramic

It is difficult to write about Hublot without abusing words such as innovation and innovative, which the brand’s press releases sagely suggest. Well, the world’s most difficult to pronounce two-syllable watch brand name has delivered on what might be a genuine innovation in watchmaking – multi-coloured homogenous ceramic. Right on the heels of the LVMH Watch Week and with just weeks before Watches and Wonders Geneva, Hublot gets ahead of the news cycle with a proper world’s first in the Big Bang Unico Magic Ceramic. To paraphrase Hublot’s official release, this marks the culmination of years of research and development, and allows said R&D unit to show its worth.

Hublot’s Big Bang Unico Magic Ceramic

Hublot is a pioneer in crafting vibrantly coloured ceramics, and Magic Ceramic might be the highest level expression of its expertise yet. Unlike conventional ceramic watches, the limited-edition Big Bang Unico model features a seamless fusion (we did not even try resisting) of colours, achieved through a patent-pending process – creating a visually striking effect. On that note, the wider watch world has already drawn parallels between what Hublot has done here and what a peer revealed last year. We will only say that Hublot appears ready to deliver real watches, with the Big Bang Unico Magic Ceramic confirmed to be a limited edition of 20 pieces (see below).

Achieving Hublot’s chromatic feat required extensive knowledge of ceramic pigmentation and temperature regulation. Hublot’s research and development team, which it likes to call the “alchemists of time,” developed a proprietary technique that ensures uniformity in colour distribution without compromising the material’s durability. As you can see, the bezel of the Big Bang Unico Magic Ceramic is crafted in dark grey ceramic, accentuated by intense blue circles that form an organic, abstract pattern. It is key to recall here that only the bezel is in Magic Ceramic, with the rest of the case in bead-blasted and polished black ceramic. No doubt a full Magic Ceramic watch is on the way…

“I feel an immense pride in seeing our team bring to life a material that perfectly embodies Hublot’s soul: a subtle blend of science, alchemy, and playful boldness,” said Hublot Director of R&D Mathias Buttet. “After more than four years of research, we have mastered the art of combining vivid, patented colours—a true technical feat. Thanks to the creativity and talent of our young engineers taking the lead, Hublot’s scientific approach and innovating spirit will continue to astonish.”

And now, because this is a story about a watch not merely a bezel, here are a few words on the Big Bang model overall. Squirreled away within the 42mm ceramic case is the in-house Unico automatic flyback chronograph movement. The watch is complemented by a full black lined rubber strap, seamlessly merging contemporary aesthetics with functionality. This movement is finished in a matching grey tone to the bezel, and provides a very decent power reserve of 72 hours.
