A University of Alabama at Birmingham football player is facing charges of attempted murder and assault. Daniel Mincey is accused of stabbing two teammates hours before a UAB home game last weekend. Court documents identified the players who were stabbed as Joshua Underwood and JaSire Peterson, both defensive linemen, per the Associated Press.

Authorities wrote in charging documents that Daniel Mincey stabbed both men with a knife. However, court documents filed in Jefferson County did not describe what led up to the alleged assault before Saturday’s game. The stabbing happened on campus at the Football Operations Building, hours before UAB’s Blazers played the University of South Florida, officials said. It’s unclear who found the stabbing victims.

What To Know About The UAB Football Players

Interim head coach Alex Mortensen said the two injured defensive lineman have been released from the hospital and are recovering. Underwood is a freshman from Fultondale, Alabama, and Peterson a redshirt sophomore from Union City, New Jersey.

The team’s online roster describes Daniel Mincey as a 6-foot-4 redshirt freshman from Pompano Beach, Florida. He was previously at the University of Kentucky. Court records reportedly did not immediately show if Mincey had a lawyer who could comment on the case. There are no additional details about his arrest.

UAB Moves Forward With Remaining Football Games

UAB Athletic Director Mark Ingram spoke at a news conference on Monday, saying, “Saturday was a very sad day for UAB football and for UAB athletics.”

Both Ingram and Head Coach Mortensen declined to discuss the details of what happened, citing the investigation. “They appreciate everyone’s thoughts and prayers,” Mortensen said of Joshua Underwood and JaSire Peterson.

“What’s most important to us is the well-being of our student-athletes, of our players. We are going to make sure they have every opportunity this week to get the counseling services that they need,” Mortensen added.

Additionally, the coach said players will have the opportunity to step away from practice if they need to. Meanwhile, regarding the football season, the Blazers decided to proceed with the last home game of the season, honoring graduating seniors. However, several players opted to sit it out. Their last game is Nov. 29 at Tulsa.
