Harry Kane’s stoppage-time header rescued Bayern Munich a 2-2 draw at Union Berlin as the Bundesliga leaders’ record 16-game winning start to the season was halted.

Bayern twice hit back from behind to salvage a point, with Kane heading home his 23rd goal of the season in all competitions in the fourth minute of added time after Danilho Doekhi’s double for Berlin had sandwiched Luis Diaz’s first-half equaliser.

Vincent Kompany’s side had extended their record winning start for Europe’s top five leagues to 16 games in midweek with a 2-1 Champions League win over Paris St Germain.

But they were far from their best four days after their statement win at the Parc des Princes and dropped their first Bundesliga points of the campaign.

Bayern came under early pressure and were given an early let-off when VAR controversially ruled Ilyas Ansah was offside when he headed beyond Manuel Neuer from Tom Rothe’s flick-on.

Harry Kane scored a late equaliser for Bayern against Union Berlin.

Berlin continued to make all the running and took a deserved 27th-minute lead through Doekhi, who fired home from close range following a corner.

Ansah saw another effort saved by Neuer in the bottom corner as Bayern struggled to carve out any openings, but the visitors equalised with their first real effort on target seven minutes before the interval.

Josip Stanisic provided the assist and Diaz, who struck both Bayern’s goals in their midweek Champions League win against PSG, lashed the ball into the roof of the net from a tight angle.

Neuer denied Ansah again with another low save in first-half stoppage time and at the other end Diaz steered a golden chance wide from in front of goal before Kane’s rebound effort was ruled out for offside.

Bayern made another sluggish start to the second period and Berlin midfielder Janik Haberer blazed high and wide from inside the area.

Kompany’s side improved in terms of chances created in the final 30 minutes. Michael Olise’s angled shot was well saved and Jonathan Tah flashed a volley off target.

Berlin regained the lead with seven minutes left as Doekhi dispatched a low volley into the bottom corner following a free-kick into the box.

That appeared to have sealed the home side a memorable win, but Kane latched on to substitute Tom Bischof’s excellent cross in time added on as Bayern extended their unbeaten run this season.
