Littlefield Retreat in Maine Has Hobbit Homes and Tree Houses

In a world where glamping sites and tiny home resorts are a dime a dozen, it takes some work to stand out—and even more effort to keep things environmentally friendly and luxurious. 

Enter, Littlefield Retreat in Springvale, Maine. The Purposely Lost property, set on 15 acres of pristine forest alongside a trout pond, has five standalone homes that are unlike anything you’ve ever seen. There are two hobbit homes built into the hillside, complete with round, Lord of the Rings-esque doorways and a few perks we’re pretty sure Frodo and his friends had to do without—including a private hot tub, a huge stone patio with a fire pit, and high-end custom finishes.

In the trees towering above the hobbit homes are three custom tree houses built on stilts that are surrounded by greenery. Each home is tucked along the edge of Littlefield Pond and outfitted with a private dock, canoe, and outdoor hot tub.

“Everyone needs a chance to power down the screens and break away from the daily demands of our personal and professional lives,” Bryce Avallone, a founder of Purposely Lost, told Travel + Leisure. “Soak in a private hot tub under the stars, canoe on Littlefield Pond, fish from your private dock, fry up your catch in the full kitchen, and host a game night by the woodstove.”

Every tiny home at the Littlefield Retreat has two bedrooms, a bathroom, a fully stocked kitchen, a hot tub, and a private dock on the pond with a canoe. The amenities may be the same, but each structure is wonderfully unique. One tree house has a floating staircase, while another has a hot tub tucked in a natural grotto. Small touches, like a rounded, hobbit-style fireplace mantel or dragonfly drawer pulls, showcase the workmanship that went into each home.

And beyond being beautiful, the property is Maine’s first and only carbon-neutral tree house and hobbit home retreat. Wind and solar energy keep the lights on, and even the commute from Portland, Maine, or Boston has been offset by the property for each guest. (The retreat is about 45 minutes by car from Portland and under two hours from Boston.)

The homes at Littlefield Retreat are available year-round, start at $299 a night, and can accommodate four people.
