Kumail Nanjiani and his wife Emily Gordon are grieving the loss of their beloved cat, Bagel.

The couple shared the sad news on Instagram Wednesday, September 10, in a heartfelt joint post with by 19 photos and videos of the gray tabby who had been with them for 17 years.

“She traveled the world with us,” the tribute began.

“She loved her boxes of trash and catnip bananas. She loved churu but never out of the tube.”

Remembering Bagel as “happy, carefree and totally herself till the very end,” they called her their “tiny perfect angel for her entire life.”

The post concluded with a touching note, “It wasn’t enough time. But it’ll have to do. We will always love her,” along with her birth and passing dates, “August 2008 – September 2025.”

As the couple reflected on Bagel’s life, Nanjiani also recently opened up a difficult chapter in his own career, the fallout from Marvel’s Eternals.

Speaking on the Working It Out podcast, the actor revealed how the movie’s reception deeply affected him and left him uncertain about his future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Nanjiani explained that when he first signed on, he believed it would define the next decade of his career.

“I signed on for six movies. I signed on for a video game. I signed on for a theme park ride. They make you sign on for all this stuff,” he said.

“You’re like, ‘This is the next ten years of my life. Okay, so I’ll be doing Marvel movies every year, and in between, I’ll do my own little things.’”

But the reality was far different. Eternals, directed by Chloé Zhao and featuring a star-studded cast including Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Gemma Chan, Richard Madden and Kit Harington, was met with lukewarm reviews and a mixed box office response.

For Nanjiani, the criticism hit hard.

“It came out, it got really bad reviews, and it didn’t do that well. It shattered me too much,” he admitted, adding that the experience led him to seek therapy.

“For me, what really hit me, was just realizing too much of my self esteem was tied up in other people’s reaction to my work,” he shared.

Despite the disappointment, Nanjiani still takes pride in the project.

“There were a few too many people in Eternals, if the reviews are to be believed. I loved the movie. I’m very proud of the movie,” he said.

For Nanjiani and Gordon, the past few days have been one of reflection, balancing the heartbreak of saying goodbye to Bagel with the lessons of resilience and perspective that continue to shape his career.
