    It’s no secret that Johannesburg is a vibrant city with lots to do. It’s also no secret that most of those fun Johannesburg attractions come with a price tag but worry not, we’ve compiled a list of 10 free things that you can do in Johannesburg this weekend. So put that bank card away and dive into a budget friendly Johannesburg adventure.

    Free Outdoor Activities to do in Johannesburg

    1. Hike at the Wilds Nature Reserve

    This little nature haven is a breath of fresh air (literally). Think waterfalls, fountains, indigenous plants and a whole lot of bird watching. The atmosphere is just different at the Wilds, you just have to go there for yourself.

    • Operating hours: 6 AM – 6 PM
    • How long is the hike at The WIlds: It’s only a 1,6 km hike, perfect for first timers and families with kids.
    • Can you picnic at The Wilds: 10000% yes!
    • Facilities/events: small corporate events, photography, walkways and footpaths.
    • Getting there:  Zone 1, Houghton. Take Joe Slovo Drive from the inner city or Houghton Drive from the north.

    2. Braai at Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve

    Having a braai at the Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve is a very fun and free family activity to do in Johannesburg. Imagine boerewors on hot coals with a view of mountains and nature, simply epic! 

    • Operating hours: 6 AM – 6 PM
    • Can you hike at Klipriviersberg: Yes you can! There are 12 trails (all beginner friendly) ranging from 5 km – 11 km
    • Are there animals at Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve: Short answer – yes! Expect to see Wilderbeests, Zebras, Springbok and over 200 species of bird. 
    • Pet friendly: Bummer! Pets aren’t allowed for now. 

    There’s nothing like a boerie roll with a view. The only thing better is saving R500 off your next domestic flight!

    3. Picnic at James and Ethel Gray Park

    If you’re in the mood for scenic nature walks, breezy picnics and panoramic views of Johannesburg’s skyline then you’re in the mood for this park. 

    • Operating hours: 6 AM – 6 PM
    • Pet friendly: Yes, bring the doggos and cats.
    • Is there a braai area: Fires are not allowed here so that also means no braais but bring that picnic basket!
    • Getting there: It’s in Birdhaven, next to Melrose Arch. Main entrance is off North Street.

    4. Zoo Lake

    Probably one of the most well known free Johannesburg attractions on this list, this is a picnic and braai spot with a lake view and ducks to match. 

    Things to do at Zoo Lake:

    • Picnic under the trees
    • Feed the ducks
    • Rent a row boat (not free, just FYI)
    • Bird watch/people watch 

    Note: Rowboats are available to rent, but they’re not free.

    5. Parkruns

    If you are a fitness enthusiast, obsessed with getting your steps in for the day or just looking to get your feet hitting the ground then parkruns are for you! 

    • Where can I find parkruns in Johannesburg: Head over to the parkrun website and find an event near you
    • How long is a parkrun: It’s just 5 km, not too much of a sweat!
    • Can I walk during a parkrun: If you prefer to walk instead of run, go for it. Completely fine!

    6. First Sundays at the Victoria Yards

    If a chilled arty vibe is what you’re after, then look no further. First Sundays at Victoria Yards offer live band music, art exhibitions, gardens and more!

    • When: Every first Sunday of the month. 10:30 AM – 16:30 PM. After party at the Bond Society with live DJ’s till late.
    • Where: 16 Viljoen St, Lorentzville, Johannesburg.
    • Pet friendly: Yes but please have your furry buddies on a leash.

    7. Maboneng Precinct 

    Maboneng Precinct

    Can you say you’ve been to Johannesburg if you have not been to the Maboneng precinct? Think art shows, artisan bars, live street music and vibe you’ll not soon forget.

    • Best time to visit Maboneng: Weekends are the liveliest, especially after dark. But if you want to avoid crowds or go with family, try during the day. 
    • Is Maboneng safe: Generally safe but you can never be too careful. Be aware of your surroundings at all times. 
    • Getting there: Maboneng is in downtown Joburg CBD, you can get there using Ubers or driving.

    8. Vilakazi Street and the Hector Pieterson Memorial

    Which other street in the world can say it has housed 2 Nobel Peace Prize winners? Only Vilakazi Street in Soweto holds that title, housing the great Nelson Mandela and archbishop Desmond Tutu. Just walk a little further and you’re at Hector Pieterson memorial, a monument of the fight against apartheid. 

    • Is Vilakazi Street safe: Yes, pretty safe but one can never be too careful anywhere so be alert.
    • What to expect on Vilakazi Street: Expect cultural street performances, an array of clubs and hangout spots, lots of dancing and good vibes all around!.
